History of IEI: The Institution of Engineers (India) is the largest professional body in the
World with almost 5,35,051 members ( 90,507 Corporate members and 444,544
Non-corporate members) spread over length and breadth of the country. With 99
State and Local Centres and the corporate Head Quarters at Kolkata it caters to
the engineering community in India and abroad in a very systematic way. It was
registered under India Companies Act 1913 in the city of Madras (now Chennai) on
13 September 1920. The formal inauguration ceremony took place on 23 February
1921, in the Hall of Asiatic Society of Bengal in presence of H.E. lord
Chelmsford, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India. The coveted Royal
Charter was granted to the Institution in 13 August 1935 by His Majesty the King
& Emperor George V. Since then the Institution had its steady growth interms of
activities and affiliations to curve a niche with the Engineering Community. It
has 15 Engineering divisions, which in turn organize their own activities with
the basic objective of advancing the knowledge, practice and applications of
engineering for the greatest benefit of the people. The Institution has gained
special status in the world forums like the World Energy Council (WEC), World
Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), Commonwealth Engineers’ Council
(CEC), International Federation of Prestressed Concrete (FIP), International
Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), International Institution of Production
Engineering Research, World Mining Congress (WMC), and many other International
bodies. With about 16 countries it fosters close relations and collaborative
programmes.
The Institution of Engineers (India) is recognized as Scientific and Industrial
Research Organisation by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research,
Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi.
About Assam State Centre: The birth of the Assam State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) took
place during the 409th Meeting of the Council held at Shillong on 28 November
1958. In post-independent India, Assam and the other States in the Northeast
also joined the rest of the country in its journey towards a modern and
technological society. With a modest beginning of less than a hundred Corporate
members in 1959, this Centre today has 2019 corporate members and is the hub of
technical activities in the entire region. Its impressive complex at downtown
Panbazar area of Guwahati is always brimming with AMIE students, members and
non-members involved with science & technology pursuits in the Northeast. The
Assam Centre has its own Library, well-equipped Auditorium, Conference Hall,
besides Guest Rooms for members of The Institution of Engineers (India). The
State Centre has also four Local Centres at Shillong Silchar, Agartala and
Namrup (Upper Assam). Over and above the routine celebration of National &
International Days and events consequence, Assam Centre also organizes its own
events depending upon the specific needs of the region. The centre also
organized seminars and workshop across the geographical area of the centre. This
centre has played the crucial role of bringing together the professionals from
industry and academia into a common platform for guiding and assisting the local
Governments, civic bodies and policy makers. |
