The coveted Royal Charter was granted to the Institution in 13 August 1935 by His Majesty the King & Emperor George V. Since then the Institution had its steady growth interms of activities and affiliations to curve a niche with the Engineering Community. It has 15 Engineering divisions, which in turn organize their own activities with the basic objective of advancing the knowledge, practice and applications of engineering for the greatest benefit of the people. The Institution has gained special status in the world forums like the World Energy Council (WEC), World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), International Federation of Prestressed Concrete (FIP), International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC), International Institution of Production Engineering Research, World Mining Congress (WMC), and many other International bodies. With about 16 countries it fosters close relations and collaborative programmes.

About Assam State Centre:

The birth of the Assam State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) took place during the 409th Meeting of the Council held at Shillong on 28 November 1958. In post-independent India, Assam and the other States in the Northeast also joined the rest of the country in its journey towards a modern and technological society. With a modest beginning of less than a hundred Corporate members in 1959, this Centre today has 2019 corporate members and is the hub of technical activities in the entire region. Its impressive complex at downtown Panbazar area of Guwahati is always brimming with AMIE students, members and non-members involved with science & technology pursuits in the Northeast. The Assam Centre has its own Library, well-equipped Auditorium, Conference Hall, besides Guest Rooms for members of The Institution of Engineers (India). The State Centre has also four Local Centres at Shillong Silchar, Agartala and Namrup (Upper Assam). Over and above the routine celebration of National & International Days and events consequence, Assam Centre also organizes its own events depending upon the specific needs of the region. The centre also organized seminars and workshop across the geographical area of the centre. This centre has played the crucial role of bringing together the professionals from industry and academia into a common platform for guiding and assisting the local Governments, civic bodies and policy makers.
